Early diagnosis of patients with Legionnaires’ disease, even if is only one, is
essential to identify the contamination source and further healthy carriers.
Thus, thecultureindependentmethods, suchasbasedonthePCRtechnique
should be used in agreement withmicrobiological methods, resulting in higher
sensitivity and least time consuming. Therefore, the using a diagnostic test for
detection of
L. pneumophila
, based on PCR technique, is favorable for patients
with suspected Legionnaires’ disease that produce mucus and may allow early
detection of a significant number of other potential patients.
