In sustainable construction there is a great responsibility in the social
component in providing to occupants, residents and visitors appropriate
and healthy spaces so that they can cope, work and live in good and safe
conditions. Additionally, given that one of the main benefits of sustainable
construction is toprovide occupantsworkspaces that take into consideration
allexternalandinternal issues,thatmayaffect theirproductivity,performance
and health. One of the main attractions of sustainable construction and
major motivators that have led to the exponential growth that is taking
the world in the adoption of this type of construction practice, the direct
benefit of having the occupants of these spaces and their relationship
directly to productivity and decreased absenteeism and illnesses related to
their activities in those spaces. In green buildings (LEED Certified - Source
USGBC) the rate of productivity of individuals is improved between 6-18%,
decrease absenteeism rates approximately 10%. This means that with the
same level of staff, businesses can increase productivity. There is therefore
no surprise that in developed countries (eg. USA), federal governments
have laws requiring that all new construction and renovations of existing
buildings have to be certified sustainable and that some of the private
financial corporations and banks globally are adopting the same practices.
Among the most important parameters of sustainable buildings are
directly related to people such as: IAQ indoor environmental quality (for its
acronyminEnglish), the temperature andhumidity environments, adequate
lighting, access to natural light visual and external connectivity. The air we
breathe, air renovation on closed spaces and care of outdoor pollutants
should have special attention and care to not affect the occupants.
It was precisely the lack of attention of one of the systems of the building
