and minimizing the risks of Legionella.
There are two chapters ahead that address in a more specific way
the available techniques for detecting Legionella in environmental water
samples, written by microbiologists Welington Luiz Araújo, Marilia and
Solange Costa Lima. As a counterpoint to the detection of Legionella in
water samples, we have Professor Leo Kunigk together with Professor
Cynthia Jurkiewicz presenting techniques for minimizing contamination
by disinfecting systems.
We were also careful to provide perspectives about Legionella in foreign
countries, since many have years of experience with the issue, including in
terms of public policy. Participating we have Dennis Kelly, that provides
the issue of Legionella in the United Kingdom (one of the countries with
the most rigid and old laws on the control of Legionella in water systems),
Raquel Rodrigues with a view on the issue in Portugal, and to conclude
Claressa Lucas and Natalia A. Kozak-Muiznieks, representatives of the
control and prevention of diseases in the United States (CDC).
The last block of texts discusses a very important matter targeted for the
Brazilian reality. Gilberto Natalini talks about the public polices of the issue
while Mirina Dilguerian and Danielle Denny exam the legal responsibilities
for Legionella risks. The keywords are negligence, civil, criminal and
environmental responsibility for all and any owner or person responsible
for a water system. Thus we have the last text, Fernando H. Bensoussan,
presents what is recognized by the international technical community as
the best tool on how take care of the problem: a risk assessment performed
by a competent professional.
