at times are extremely difficult to define, were identified for 17 of the 44
outbreaks, and in some cases, more than one failing was identified.
Analysis was carried out on the industrial sector where the outbreak
occurred. Further analyses were carried out on the types of water system
involved and also on the “failings” that contributed to the outbreaks.
Outbreaks by Sector (n=44)
The sector covering 27% of the outbreaks was classed as “not specified”,
possibly pointing to the fact the better data collection and investigation
might help reduce this level . It is not an uncommon occurrence however,
particularly in community acquired outbreaks, where finding the source of
the outbreak has proved to be problematic and in some cases impossible.
Manufacturing linked outbreaks could conceivably be caused by cooling
towers, hot and cold water systems and/or by any other spray creating water
based process systems.
